Vancouver: The entertainment world is in shock following the tragic death of Canadian actor Stewart McLean, best known for his role in the hit Netflix series Virgin River. The 45-year-old was found dead in Lions Bay, British Columbia, with authorities now treating his death as a homicide.
McLean was last seen alive on May 15, 2026, at his residence in Lions Bay. His family reported him missing on May 18, prompting a search by the Squamish RCMP. On May 22, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed that his remains had been located in the same area.
Police described the case as an isolated incident and are actively reviewing CCTV footage, conducting interviews, and gathering evidence to build a timeline of McLean’s final days. “We are pursuing all available leads as we work to find answers for the family, friends and loved ones of Mr. McLean,” said IHIT Cpl. Esther Tupper.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Stewart “Stew” McLean built a solid career in television and film over the past decade. He appeared in popular shows including Arrow, Supernatural, The 100, Travelers, and Murder in a Small Town. In Virgin River Season 7, he played a memorable barfly character that resonated with fans.
Beyond acting, McLean also worked as a producer on several projects. Colleagues and his talent agency remembered him as a “truly great guy” who brought dedication and warmth to every set he joined.
This sudden loss comes as a heavy blow to the Canadian acting community. As the homicide investigation continues, friends, family, and fans are left mourning a talented performer taken far too soon.
