JD Wetherspoon pubs are set to discontinue sales of San Miguel lager by the end of November, marking a significant change for its patrons. The pub chain announced that Poretti, an Italian lager, will replace the Filipino favorite.
Priced at under £4 a pint, and even cheaper on Mondays at £3.20 as part of their “Monday Club” promotion, the move is expected to stir mixed reactions from customers.
Many fans have already voiced their disappointment, lamenting the loss of what has been one of Wetherspoons’ best-selling beers. Social media responses ranged from upset sentiments, with one user stating “San Miguel will be no more in Wetherspoons at the end of November, shed a tear,” to positive remarks from those welcoming the switch to Poretti, which offers a distinctive, refreshing taste.
While the transition is believed to be influenced by San Miguel’s licensing shift from Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company to Budweiser Brewing Group starting next year, some customers are excited to try the new brew that dates back to 1877.
Poretti’s introduction is positioned as a full-flavored lager with a clear appearance and balanced bitterness, which Wetherspoons hopes will win over its loyal clientele.
As the change approaches, pub staff have expressed their concerns over handling potential complaints, given San Miguel’s popularity among regulars. This strategic switch aligns with the chain’s efforts to adapt its offerings while maintaining competitive pricing and customer interest.
