Shelley Luther: Defying COVID-19 restrictions, Shelley Luther won a Texas House seat. Over 75% of House District 62 voters chose her over Tiffany Drake.

In 2020, Luther reopened Salon à la Mode in Dallas despite government shutdown orders, becoming a national figure. A lawsuit ensued when she kept her salon open despite restrictions. She received a $1,000 daily fine and seven days in jail for violating the court’s closure order from a Dallas County judge.

Luther’s actions garnered much support despite this controversy. Her determination gave her strong support from Texas voters and symbolized resistance to COVID-19 restrictions.

Luther is a repeat candidate. Drew Springer defeated her in a 2020 Texas Senate runoff. Her 2022 District 62 House challenge against incumbent Reggie Smith failed. She returned this year and defeated Smith in the primary and was elected in the general election.

Her website describes Luther as “who won’t back down from a fight.” Her campaign stressed her commitment to her beliefs. In District 62, which includes Grayson, Franklin, Fannin, and Delta counties, voters responded strongly to this message.

Luther will represent Texas at the state Capitol, where supporters hope she will defend personal and business rights. Her journey from salon owner to state representative reflects local politics and Texans’ lockdown frustration.

After winning District 62, former salon owner Shelley Luther brings her values and determination to the Texas House.
