Maryland Food Poisoning: A foodborne illness outbreak has left 46 employees hospitalized after sharing a homemade meal at NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors in Jessup, Maryland. The incident occurred on Monday when workers reported symptoms of food poisoning approximately one hour after consuming a noodle dish brought in by a co-worker.
Emergency responders from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services were dispatched to the scene around 3:45 p.m. Following evaluation, the affected individuals were transported to various hospitals in the area, where all were reported to be in non-critical condition and have since been released.
Initial investigations by the Howard County Health Department, in collaboration with the Maryland Department of Health, indicate that the illness stemmed from outside food prepared by an employee at home over the weekend. This unsanctioned meal was shared among colleagues during their shift. Health officials have stated that they are working to gather more specific information about the dish and the preparation methods used.
NAFCO, the parent company of the distributor, emphasized that the food responsible for the outbreak did not originate from their facilities, which adhere to rigorous health and safety standards. The company confirmed that their operations are regularly inspected and comply with all regulations.
“Preliminary indications are that the illness was related to the outside food prepared by an employee and shared with others at the facility,” the Howard County Health Department stated. “At this time, we are not aware of any further illness connected to this incident and believe there is little risk to the larger community.”
The health department’s ongoing investigation aims to ensure the safety of all employees and the broader community. NAFCO reassured customers that their products remain safe and uncontaminated by this incident.
As health officials continue to monitor the situation, they advise employees to exercise caution when sharing meals at work, emphasizing the importance of food safety practices to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
