Hofstra University: Falls to Charleston in Exciting Back-and-Forth Battle

Hofstra University: In a hard-fought and engaging matchup, the 18th-ranked Hofstra University men’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat against the College of Charleston at Ralph Lundy Field on Saturday afternoon. Despite Jacob Woznicki’s impressive goal late in the second half providing renewed energy for the determined Pride, the early multiple goal lead established by the opportunistic Cougars proved to be an insurmountable obstacle.

The loss halted Hofstra’s streak of solid performances, dropping their overall impressive record to 10-4-2 and 4-3 in the competitive Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) standings. In contrast, Charleston further boosted their credentials to 10-4-2 and cemented their position with a commanding 4-1-2 record in conference play.

Hofstra came out with intent and dominated possession for large stretches of the initial half, testing the Charleston defense with fluid passes and runs. However, it was the visiting Cougars who struck first through a calculating finish. Just ten minutes in, Leonardo D’Ambrosio sent a clever shot across the goalmouth, finding the far post and giving his side an early 1-0 advantage. Ryan Watson then extended Charleston’s lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute via astute assists from D’Ambrosio and Adil Iggoute.

Woznicki lit the fuse for a Hofstra comeback attempt in the second half, cleverly scoring in the 54th minute after expertly connecting with a precise long ball from Teddy Baker. Woznicki’s well-taken effort brought the motivated Pride within one, with Pierce Infuso’s incisive pass leading to the finished product. However, Charleston were quick to respond; Iggoute netted the visitors’ third with precision in the 74th minute, effectively sealing the victory with help from Tom Wilson and Ezra White.

The tightly contested match showcased competitive spirit, with Hofstra managing 13 shots compared to Charleston’s 16. Goalkeepers Olly Marshall and Filippo Dadone each put in stellar displays, recording five saves apiece to highlight the intensity of the compelling game.

Looking ahead, Hofstra will seek to regain momentum on Saturday, November 2nd, when they welcome league rivals the University of Delaware for Senior Night at 7 pm. As the Pride looks to bounce back, they will rely on the scoring prowess of players like Woznicki to help return to winning ways.
