Singapore Airlines Faces Turbulent Week: Emergency Landing and Expanded Codeshare Partnership

Singapore Airlines: Singapore Airlines (SIA) is navigating a challenging period following an emergency incident involving one of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and the recent expansion of its codeshare agreement with Air India.

Emergency Landing Due to Windshield Crack

On October 27, Singapore Airlines Flight SQ636, en route from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), was forced to make an emergency landing in Taipei. The incident occurred when the cockpit windshield of the 17-year-old aircraft, registered 9V-SWI, cracked suddenly while cruising at 36,000 feet over Taiwan.

With 249 passengers and 17 crew members onboard, the aircraft safely diverted to Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), where arrangements were made for passengers’ accommodations. A Singapore Airlines spokesperson expressed their sincere apologies for the inconvenience, emphasizing that passenger safety remains the airline’s highest priority. The flight’s incident follows a series of mishaps, including severe turbulence earlier this year that resulted in injuries and a tragic fatality.

Expanding Codeshare Partnerships Amid Service Concerns

In tandem with addressing safety incidents, Singapore Airlines recently announced an expansion of its codeshare partnership with Air India on October 27. This agreement adds 11 Indian cities and 40 international destinations to SIA’s network. However, the announcement has raised concerns among travelers regarding service quality.

In this year’s Skytrax World Airline Awards, SIA was ranked as the second-best airline globally, while Air India lagged behind at 90th place. Many social media users voiced their worries that booking an SIA ticket could result in receiving Air India’s service standards, which are perceived to be lower.

Industry experts explained that codeshare flights are agreements allowing one airline to market a flight operated by another, often leading to different service levels. While Singapore Airlines aims to partner with airlines that complement its network and maintain similar service standards, the reality may vary.
