Toll Free Deepavali 2024: Malaysia Grants Toll-Free Highways Nationwide for Deepavali 2024 to Ease Travel and Celebrate Together

Toll Free Deepavali 2024: In celebration of Deepavali, the Malaysian government has announced toll-free access on highways for private vehicles from October 29 to 30, 2024. This toll-free period, available for 48 hours starting at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, will apply to Class 1 vehicles across the country. The initiative, valued at an estimated RM38 million, will be funded by the government as compensation to toll concessionaires, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

This toll-free arrangement, part of the government’s MADANI initiative, aims to foster a joyful, harmonious celebration for Deepavali, particularly for the Indian Hindu community. “This measure ensures that Malaysians can travel without financial burden during this festive season, promoting well-being, compassion, and unity,” stated Minister Linggi.

The toll exemption will be available at all Malaysian toll plazas, except for those on national borders, specifically the Sultan Iskandar Building on the North-South Expressway and the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link in Johor.

To manage expected high traffic volumes during Deepavali, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) recommends that drivers follow travel advisories issued by highway operators, especially the recommended travel time advisory (TTA). LLM has provided real-time CCTV traffic updates on its official website, which allows users to check highway conditions before traveling. Motorists can also reach the Highway Traffic Management Centre at 1-800-88-7752 for traffic updates or assistance.

The Works Ministry advises all drivers to ensure vehicles are in optimal condition, maintain adequate Touch ‘n Go and eWallet balances, and monitor their SmartTag batteries to ensure smooth travel. Minister Linggi also highlighted the importance of safe driving practices: “Let’s all work together to make our highways safe and reduce road accident statistics.”

This toll-free period allows families to celebrate Deepavali without the financial constraints of highway tolls, aligning with the government’s mission to create more inclusive celebrations across Malaysia’s diverse communities.
