London — British actor Michael Keating, beloved for his iconic roles in the cult sci-fi series Blake’s 7 and the long-running BBC soap EastEnders, has died at the age of 79.

News of his passing on May 21, 2026, quickly spread through the entertainment community, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans, colleagues, and fellow performers who remembered him as a talented and genuinely kind man.

Keating first captured audiences as Vila Restal, the charming yet reluctant thief in Blake’s 7 (1978–1981). He was the only character to appear in every episode of the classic space opera, bringing humor, warmth, and depth to the role of the career criminal turned rebel.

Later, he became a familiar face in EastEnders, portraying Reverend George Stevens in a recurring capacity from 2005 to 2017. The character officiated numerous key moments in Walford, including christenings, weddings, and funerals, often sharing screen time with the late June Brown’s Dot Branning.

His stage roots ran deep, beginning at Nottingham Playhouse before moves to the National Theatre and the Old Vic. Beyond his signature roles, Keating appeared in classics like Yes Minister, Midsomer Murders, Casualty, The Bill, and even Doctor Who.

Tributes poured in quickly after the announcement. The sci-fi publisher Cult Edge shared: “So terribly sad to hear reports that we’ve lost Michael Keating. What a loss, and what a wonderful man. He’ll be hugely missed.”

Film producer Keith Barnfather recalled Keating’s generous spirit during a Blake’s 7 event, while Big Finish audio producer Peter Anghelides praised his comic timing and lasting contribution to the franchise. Fans across social media echoed the sentiment, calling Vila one of their childhood heroes and remembering Keating as a “lovely, lovely man” from convention appearances.

Details about the cause of death have not been publicly released. Those close to him have asked for privacy as they grieve.

Michael Keating leaves behind a rich legacy in British television — one that blended sci-fi adventure with everyday drama and touched generations of viewers. His warmth both on and off screen will not be forgotten.
