Desmond Howard: Believes Colorado Is on the Verge of Championship Contention

Desmond Howard: ESPN analyst and former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard believes that Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes are much closer to championship contention than many realize. Speaking on College GameDay, Howard expressed his confidence in Colorado’s potential, led by standout quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way sensation Travis Hunter.

“What Coach Prime is doing down there at Boulder, you know, I like Shedeur, he’s QB1 for me. Travis Hunter,” Howard said, as the GameDay panel assessed the playoff potential of the Buffaloes. He emphasized the importance of Colorado’s game against Texas Tech in Lubbock, noting that a victory would position them as favorites in their remaining matchups.

Despite a 6-2 overall record and two losses, Colorado has impressed in Big 12 play, holding a 4-1 conference mark. Their only league defeat came against Kansas State, but they still have a path to the Big 12 Championship if they can win their final four games. With BYU and Iowa State ahead in the standings, the Buffaloes need a bit of help, but Howard sees a legitimate chance for Colorado to make noise if they reach the postseason.

“Their biggest challenge is in the trenches,” Howard added. “Once they get to the playoffs, they’ll face bigger and stronger opponents. That could be their Achilles heel, but this team is right there.”

The Buffs’ playoff hopes may hinge on finishing the season strong, especially with stars like Hunter, a Heisman contender, and Shedeur Sanders leading the charge. If Colorado can secure the Big 12 title and finish at 11-2, they would be well-positioned for a College Football Playoff berth, especially in a scenario where they compete against an undefeated or one-loss BYU team.

Deion Sanders’ early-season warning—“you better get us right now because this is the worst we’re gonna be”—is proving prophetic, as his revitalized squad looks primed for a thrilling finish.
