A Sacramento State football game continued Saturday night after reports of gunfire on the university campus prompted a police response and an emergency warning to people near the stadium.
Sacramento State officials said shots were reported at about 7:15 p.m. in Parking Structure III, which is located close to Hornet Stadium, where the Sacramento State football game was taking place. No injuries were reported.
The incident unfolded as fans were attending the game, creating a tense situation around one of the busiest areas of campus.
University officials sent an emergency alert advising people to avoid Parking Structure III and directing those near the stadium to shelter in place while police investigated.
The warning urged people to remain in the stadium area until authorities gave an all-clear. Parking Structure III is the parking facility closest to Hornet Stadium.
Despite the reported gunfire and the emergency notification, the Sacramento State football game was not stopped, according to reporting from the stadium.
Witnesses told authorities that the person believed to be involved in the shooting left the parking structure on foot, prompting officers to begin searching the area.
Police later detained a suspect, according to Sacramento State officials. Authorities also said there was no continuing threat to the campus.
The incident raised immediate concerns among fans and members of the campus community, particularly because the reported gunfire occurred while a large crowd had gathered for the football game.
Sacramento State has not reported any injuries connected to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine what led to the gunfire and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For those following Sacramento State football, Saturday night’s game became an unexpected backdrop to a campus emergency, with police activity unfolding only a short distance from the stadium while the contest continued.
