Red Ribbon Week 2024: A Nationwide Call to Action for Drug Prevention

October 23-31, 2024, marks Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s oldest and largest drug misuse prevention awareness initiative, now in its 39th year. Established in 1985 to honor DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was tragically murdered while investigating drug cartels, Red Ribbon Week encourages Americans across the country to take a stand for a drug-free lifestyle. Camarena’s sacrifice sparked a movement that resonates today, as communities, schools, and government agencies come together to promote the importance of drug education and prevention.

This year’s theme, “Life is a Movie: Film Drug Free,” emphasizes the importance of empowering young people to make healthy, drug-free choices. Throughout the nine-day event, schools and organizations nationwide are participating in activities that encourage students to pledge a drug-free life. In Alaska, for instance, Governor Mike Dunleavy has proclaimed October 23-31, 2024, as Red Ribbon Week and launched the Red Ribbon Week Door Decorating Contest, fostering important conversations about drug prevention in schools from elementary to high school.

The DEA Omaha Division is also leading major efforts, delivering drug education presentations across five states while lighting iconic landmarks in red to symbolize the commitment to a drug-free America. In cities like Minneapolis, Omaha, and Sioux Falls, landmarks including the 35W Bridge, Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, and The Arc of Dreams will be illuminated in red, raising awareness of the dangers of drug misuse and the importance of community engagement in preventing drug abuse.

As fentanyl, pink cocaine, and methamphetamine continue to pose severe threats to public health, law enforcement agencies are urging families to have open conversations about the risks and lethality of these substances. In 2024 alone, the DEA has seized nearly 3,000 pounds of methamphetamine and over 3.5 million lethal doses of fentanyl across the Midwest, underscoring the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
