ABC has landed a highly anticipated comedy project from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom and her husband, writer Dan Gregor, titled Do You Want Kids?. The single-camera series, which explores a unique narrative concept, follows a married couple who, in one universe, have a child, and in another, do not. The show delves into how that monumental decision shapes their lives in each reality.
Bloom is set to star in the project and co-write the script with Gregor, marking another collaboration for the married duo. The series has been greenlit for development by ABC and will be produced by 20th Television, with award-winning producer Steve Levitan (Modern Family) on board as an executive producer.
Bloom and Levitan previously worked together on Hulu’s comedy series Reboot, which featured Bloom in a lead role. Levitan, known for his success with Modern Family, joins this new project through Levitan Productions, alongside co-executive producer Danielle Stokdyk.
The story centers around a husband and wife grappling with the pivotal life decision of whether or not to have children, creating a parallel narrative that contrasts the couple’s life in two alternate realities—one with a child and one without. Bloom and Gregor, who have a child together in real life, have drawn inspiration from their own experiences as parents.
The project marks Bloom’s return to television after her successful one-woman Netflix special, Death, Let Me Do My Special, which earned rave reviews. Bloom’s past success includes her Golden Globe-winning performance on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and her recent acting credits feature notable roles in Julia on Max and The School for Good and Evil on Netflix.
Gregor, whose writing credits include How I Met Your Mother and the Emmy-winning Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers, brings his comedic expertise to Do You Want Kids?. He recently co-wrote the upcoming Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson. Gregor and Bloom’s collaborative history, particularly on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has proven to be a successful creative partnership, and Do You Want Kids? promises to be another exciting project for the couple.
This new sitcom adds to Bloom and Gregor’s growing list of credits, offering a humorous yet thought-provoking exploration of parenthood. With Levitan’s proven success in comedy and Bloom’s unique charm, Do You Want Kids? is expected to be a strong contender in ABC’s lineup, appealing to a wide audience.
For fans of Rachel Bloom, this project is sure to be another hit, solidifying her place as one of TV’s most versatile comedic talents. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting series takes shape!
