Introduced in 1998 under the “Ford 2000” global strategy, the Focus was engineered to unify Ford’s compact offerings across North America and Europe. The result was an immediate hit. Over its lifetime, more than 12 million Focus models were sold, making it one of the automaker’s highest-volume vehicles.
Though the Focus was designed as an economical daily driver, it won over performance fans as well. The sporty Focus ST, first launched in 2002 as the ST170, brought upgraded brakes, stiffer suspension, and more aggressive styling. Later came the legendary Focus RS, a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive hot hatch that delivered rally-level thrills on public roads.
Production of the RS ended in 2020, but the ST remained in Ford’s lineup until September, keeping the Focus’ enthusiast legacy alive until nearly the very end.
