Guild Wars Reforged, a major 20th-anniversary update to the classic 2005 MMORPG, is officially launching on December 3 on Steam and Windows PC. The update brings a complete modernization of the game, including controller support, new visual upgrades, and redesigned user interface features — all aimed at making the iconic MMO easier and more enjoyable to play in 2024 and beyond.
ArenaNet and co-development partner 2weeks, a studio formed by former ArenaNet developers, announced that guild wars reforged will be free for all existing players. For new players, the Steam bundle will combine Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall into one $19.99 package.
The update introduces long-requested modern features, including Steam Deck verification, XInput controller support, high-DPI display compatibility, and larger text options. A redesigned quest-tracking system and new on-screen control guide will also help new players navigate Tyria more easily.
Visually, guild wars reforged includes enhanced graphics such as improved lighting, ambient occlusion, dynamic sky bloom effects, updated skill icons, and enhanced 3D positional audio. Developers say these upgrades allow the 20-year-old game to finally take advantage of today’s GPUs and high-resolution monitors.
ArenaNet emphasized that this is not a one-time update but the beginning of a renewed long-term commitment to the original Guild Wars. “Even after two decades, we’re still passionate about improving the experience,” said game director Stephen Clarke-Willson. The team says more improvements may arrive after launch.
2weeks co-founder Brandon Dillon — who began working on Guild Wars as a teenager — said returning to update the classic title has been “a real treat” and called the project a chance to preserve the game for future generations of MMO fans.
Guild Wars originally launched in 2005 as a groundbreaking subscription-free MMORPG that sold millions of copies and earned over a billion hours of playtime. With guild wars reforged, the developers aim to maintain the game’s legacy while delivering a modern, accessible experience for both longtime fans and new players.
The revamped version launches December 3 on Steam, marking a major milestone for one of the most beloved online RPGs of all time.
